Best gifts for a dad who does his own yard work
He has the mower, the trimmer and the blower. What he does not have is the tool that finishes a job in one pass instead of four.

He has a mower, a string trimmer and a blower. That is the standard three, and together they cover about seventy percent of what a yard needs. The remaining thirty percent he does with the wrong tool: edging with the trimmer turned sideways, raking leaves instead of reducing them, bagging brush instead of chipping it, and chasing a driveway with a pressure washer wand one stripe at a time. Each of those four jobs has a dedicated tool that replaces four passes with one, each costs under $200, and almost nobody buys them for themselves. That is the whole shape of this page.
The short answer
First, the page this is not
If the dad in question is a lawn person — soil pH, overseeding schedules, stripes — this is the wrong page and gifts for a lawn perfectionist is the right one. That page is soil test kits, a broadcast spreader and fertilizer, and there is deliberately none of that here. This page is for the dad whose relationship with the yard is a list of chores he wants to finish faster, which is a different person wanting a different present.
And if the yard is genuinely large — half an acre and up, where the problem is moving material rather than cutting it — gifts for someone with a big yard covers carts, sweepers and tow-behinds instead.
The idea: one pass instead of four
| Job | What he does now | One-pass tool | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edging a path or bed | String trimmer held sideways | WORX WG896 edger | Straight line, repeatable depth, no freehand |
| Autumn leaves | Rake and bags, or blow into a pile | WORX WG512 TRIVAC | Published 16:1 reduction -- the leaves fit in the bin |
| Spring prunings | Cut to length and fill the truck | Sun Joe CJ603E chipper | Published 21:1 reduction -- it becomes mulch |
| Washing the drive | Pressure washer wand, one stripe at a time | Greenworks 15 in surface cleaner | 15 in path per pass instead of about 4 in |
1. WORX WG896 edger — the job he is doing with the wrong tool
Ask a dad what he dislikes about yard work and "edging" comes up more than mowing does, because almost everybody edges with a string trimmer turned on its side. That cuts a line freehand, at whatever depth your wrist happens to hold, and it looks like it. The WG896 is a wheeled chassis with a 7.5 in serrated steel blade, three depth settings at 1, 1.25 and 1.5 in, a 12 A motor, 4,700 blade cycles a minute and a trencher mode for running a cable or a drip line. WORX publishes all of it.
The depth stop is the gift. It means the line is the same depth the whole way round and the same depth next month, which is the thing a freehand trimmer cannot do at any price. Our trimmer versus edger page goes through why the two tools are not substitutes. Corded, so no platform guesswork — and at 12 A it wants a decent extension cord, which our cords page covers.

2. WORX WG512 TRIVAC — the one that makes leaves disappear
A blower moves leaves to a different part of the yard. A rake moves them into a pile you still have to deal with. A vacuum-mulcher is the only one of the three that reduces the volume, and WORX publishes the number that matters: a 16:1 mulch ratio through a metal impeller, into a 1.2 bushel bag, with 600 CFM on blower duty.
Published mulch ratio: 16:1
16 bags of loose leaves in -> 1 bag out
A yard with four mature trees might produce 20 bags of loose leaves in autumn
20 / 16 = 1.25 bags of mulch out
Which is the difference between twenty trips to the kerb and one wheelbarrow to the compost. The mulch also goes straight back on the beds, which is the actual argument for mulching over bagging — our mulching versus bagging page covers that for grass.
One small data note, because we publish these rather than smooth them over: WORX states 75 mph air speed in its spec table and 70 mph in its marketing copy for this tool. Also worth knowing — a 1.2 bushel bag fills quickly, so this is a stop-and-empty tool rather than a continuous one, and our blower versus sweeper page covers the alternative for a big lawn.

3. Sun Joe CJ603E chipper — for the spring truck run
Every yard with hedges and shrubs generates a pile of prunings every spring, and the default plan is to cut it to length, fill the truck and drive it somewhere. A chipper ends that job. Sun Joe publishes a 15 A motor, a maximum branch diameter of 1.73 in, a 21:1 reduction ratio, 60 RPM no-load, a 94 dB sound rating, 6 in wheels and 39 lb net.
Published reduction ratio: 21:1
21 bags of brush in -> 1 bag of chip out
A typical spring hedge-and-shrub prune: 6 to 8 bags of brush
8 / 21 = well under half a bag of chip
So a whole spring prune becomes less than one bag, and the output is mulch you wanted to buy anyway. The limit is the 1.73 in branch diameter — this is a prunings-and-hedge-trimmings machine, not a tool for a felled tree.
Two honest cautions for a gift. It is 94 dB by Sun Joe's own figure, which means hearing protection and a thought about the neighbors. And 39 lb on 6 in wheels is something to store, so if his garage is already full this is the wrong present. Our wood chippers page compares the class.

4. Greenworks 15 in surface cleaner — check he owns a washer first
This one has a condition attached, so it is ranked last: it is an attachment, and on its own it does nothing. If he already owns a pressure washer, it is possibly the highest satisfaction-per-dollar item on this page. A pressure washer wand cleans a stripe maybe four inches wide and leaves zebra marks where the stripes overlap unevenly. A surface cleaner is a shrouded dual-nozzle rotating head that covers 15 inches in one pass with no stripes at all.
Wand, about a 4 in effective path: 240 in / 4 = 60 passes
Surface cleaner, 15 in path: 240 / 15 = 16 passes
60 / 16 = 3.75x fewer passes
And no overlap stripes, which is the part people actually notice. Greenworks publishes a 1/4 in quick-connect fitting and a 3,100 PSI rating, so it suits most electric washers — confirm his fitting before you buy.
Our surface cleaners page ranks the category properly if you want to match one to a specific washer.

Which one, by what the yard has in it
| The yard has | Buy | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| A path, drive or bed edge | WORX WG896 edger | $90 |
| Mature trees | WORX WG512 TRIVAC | $154 |
| Hedges and shrubs that get pruned | Sun Joe CJ603E chipper | $200 |
| A pressure washer already in the garage | Greenworks 15 in surface cleaner | $60 |
| All of the above and no storage space | Greenworks surface cleaner | $60 |
| You have no idea what is in it | WORX WG896 edger | $90 |
Prices are approximate and from our own daily check; the buttons show today's. If he runs an attachment-capable power head, our attachment systems page is worth a look — but you need to know his platform, which is why nothing on this page depends on it.
Verdict
Default to the WORX WG896 edger. Edging is the job the most people do with the wrong tool, the improvement is immediately visible from the street, and a depth stop is something no string trimmer can fake. The TRIVAC if there are trees, the chipper if there are hedges and storage space, and the surface cleaner if — and only if — you have checked there is a pressure washer to hang it off. All four are corded or attachments, which means you can buy any of them without knowing a thing about his batteries.

Three published depth settings and a trenching mode, which is what separates a bed edge from a sidewalk edge.

The blade is 7.5 in across but cuts 1 to 1.5 in deep, so only 13% to 20% of the disc is ever in the ground. That is by design: the shallow bite is what keeps a wheeled edger tracking straight instead of digging in. It also sets the ceiling -- 1.5 in is the deepest trench this tool will cut, no matter how long you push it.
What the numbers favor
- Three depth settings published in inches, not as vague 'positions'
- Trenching mode for a fresh bed line rather than just maintaining one
- Adjustable shaft for user height
- 3-year warranty
What they don't
- Corded -- an extension cord around beds and shrubs is a nuisance
- 1.5 in maximum depth is shallow for cutting a new bed edge in sod
- 14 lb to steer along a curve
you want one tool for edging and trimming. A stick edger that shares a battery with your trimmer does both jobs with one charge.

8.6 lb with a metal impeller and a published 16:1 mulch ratio, on a cord that never runs out.
Published specs
| Power | 12 A, corded |
|---|---|
| Air volume | 600 CFM |
| Air speed | 75 mph in the spec table (70 mph in the marketing copy) |
| Mulch ratio | 16:1 |

| Warranty | 3 years |

A US bushel is 1.244 cu ft, so the 1.2 bushel bag holds about 1.49 cu ft of mulched material. At the published 16:1 ratio that bagful started as 16 x 1.49 = 23.9 cu ft of loose leaves -- roughly a 3 ft cube. That is the number that decides how often you stop to empty, and it is why the ratio matters more than the CFM.
What the numbers favor
- 8.6 lb, light enough to hold at arm's length under a shrub
- Metal impeller where budget units use plastic
- 16:1 mulch ratio published as a figure
- Corded, so there is no runtime to plan around
What they don't
- Two different air speeds appear on the same page -- 75 mph in the specs, 70 in the copy
- Corded means an extension cord and a limit on how far you can walk
- No published decibel rating
your leaf load is a whole yard of oak. A handheld vacuum is a detail tool; a walk-behind or a tarp moves volume faster.

A 21:1 reduction ratio means 21 units of loose brush become 1 unit of mulch. Twenty-one contractor bags of hedge prunings and storm twigs reduce to a single bag of chip. Against the CJ601E's published 16:1 that is a 31% improvement (21 / 16 = 1.31), which on a day of storm cleanup is several fewer trips to the curb.
What the numbers favor
- 21:1 reduction, the higher of the two published ratios here
- 1.73 in branch capacity, 0.23 in more than the smaller model
- 94 dB against the CJ601E's 108 dB -- a real difference at the ear
- Safety hopper with a locking knob, so the cutter will not run open
- 2-year warranty published
What they don't
- 60 RPM no-load is slow feeding; this is not a machine to rush
- Sun Joe publishes no bag capacity and does not describe the cutting mechanism
- 39 lb on 6 in wheels over rough ground is awkward
- Corded, so the work happens where the outlet is
your brush pile has limbs over 1.73 in. Above that diameter this is a saw job first, and a chipper job second.

3100 / 3000 = 1.03. Greenworks rates this attachment barely above its own strongest washer, which is the most honest sizing of the three: it is built for the machine, not for a pressure figure no homeowner unit reaches.
What the numbers favor
- The 12 in wand extension is in the box, not an upsell
- Publishes a material (plastic and brass) where Westinghouse publishes none
- 15 in path, tied widest here
- 3,100 PSI is a ceiling that matches real homeowner machines rather than exceeding them by 1,000 PSI
- Sold by the same brand as two of the washers in our registry, so the quick-connect fit is not a guess
What they don't
- No GPM figure, and flow is what spins the head
- No weight and no warranty term published
- Plastic and brass against the Sun Joe's stainless steel
you are putting it on a gas machine above 3,100 PSI. Greenworks states the ceiling plainly and it is the lowest of the three.
