The winter yard tool handover, in order

One weekend in late autumn decides whether next spring starts well and whether the first snowfall finds you ready. Here is the sequence.

There is one weekend in late autumn that does more for the following year than any other, and it is not a glamorous one. It is the handover: the summer kit goes away properly and the winter kit comes out before you need it.

The order

Finish the lawn jobs on their published timings, mulch the leaves in as they fall, clean and store the summer tools with their packs indoors, then get the winter tools ready before the first forecast rather than after it.

1. Finish the lawn on its published windows

Autumn is the season that matters most for a cool-season lawn, and the last jobs have real dates attached.

The last mow is the one people get wrong by putting it on a calendar. The extension rule holds all season: maintain at 3 inches or higher, mow before the grass reaches 4.5 inches, and never remove more than one third of the leaf tissue. When the lawn stops reaching 4.5 inches, you have had your last mow.

2. Deal with the leaves rather than removing them

Penn State Extension states that a leaf layer up to about one-half inch in depth is beneficial to the lawn when mulched in with a mower, and cites Michigan State research finding no negative effects of mulching leaf litter into turf — fewer broadleaf weeds, improved soil quality and no effect on soil pH from oak or maple leaves.

The method is two passes at right angles on a dry day, with the excess blown off beds and hard surfaces onto the lawn first rather than bagged. The mower side is in best mower for mulching leaves.

3. Put the summer kit away properly

A cordless kit deletes the entire fuel maintenance routine. What is left is short enough that there is no excuse for skipping it.

  1. Pull every pack. Off every machine, before anything else. On cordless tools the pack is the entire safety interlock.
  2. Clear the mower deck underside. Packed clippings hold moisture against the deck all winter, and a battery mower has no hot engine drying it between cuts.
  3. Check the mower blade now, not in April. Extension guidance notes dull blades leave jagged edges and plants become more susceptible to disease. A blade you find is dull in November is one you can deal with before the first cut matters.
  4. Clean trimmer heads and blower intakes. Wrapped grass around a trimmer head is the commonest cause of a tool that suddenly cuts badly.
  5. Chainsaw: clear the bar groove, check the chain, fit the scabbard. If you cut firewood, this tool is about to be used more, not less.
  6. Store the packs indoors, at the charge level each manual specifies.

4. Get the winter kit ready before you need it

This is the half people skip, and it is the half that matters at 6am in a storm.

  • Charge both snow blower packs and confirm they still hold. A pack that sat all summer is the most likely thing to disappoint you.
  • Check the skid shoes. They set how high the auger housing rides, and on gravel that setting decides whether you throw stones.
  • Work the chute through its rotation. All three machines in our registry publish a 200-degree chute; a seized one is a chute you cannot aim.
  • Test the lights. EGO publishes four LED headlights on the SNT2400; Greenworks publishes LED lighting with four settings. This is a pre-dawn tool.
  • Inspect the auger for damage from last winter.
  • Know where the clearing tool is. Never clear a chute by hand — machine off, both packs out, and use a tool.

5. If you are buying a snow blower this year

The platform question is sharper for this tool than any other, because a snow blower carries two of the largest packs in a range for a machine used a handful of times a year.

The caveat that applies to everything above

Not one manufacturer in our registry — across 28 products and eight brands — publishes a cold-weather derating figure for any battery pack. Every runtime, coverage and cuts-per-charge claim on this site is a warm-condition manufacturer figure.

So: keep packs indoors until you need them, budget below the published claim in winter, and check your own manual for the manufacturer's stated operating temperature range. We will not invent a percentage.

What we cannot tell you

The extension timings above are Minnesota and Pennsylvania regional recommendations, and "late autumn" falls in different months across the country. We publish no battery storage temperature or charge percentage, no skid shoe height and no cold-weather derating, because no manufacturer page we cite states any of them.

What travels regardless: finish the lawn on its windows, mulch the leaves rather than bagging them, take every pack indoors, and get the winter machine ready in a dry garage rather than in a storm.

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh per pack; two packs = 840Wh. Over the published 18-car driveway at 8 in of snow that is about 46.7Wh per car-space. It is a work-per-charge figure rather than a runtime, which is the more useful shape for a job measured in driveways.

your driveway is short and flat and the snow is usually under a few inches. A two-stage machine is a lot of hardware for a dusting, and the single-stage costs less energy per pass.

Common questions

What should I do with yard tools before winter?
Clean each tool, take every battery pack off its machine and store the packs indoors, and check the blades and chains before they go away rather than in April. On a cordless kit there is no fuel to stabilize and no oil to change, so the list is short.
When is the last mow of the year?
When growth stops, not on a date. The extension height trigger applies all season: maintain at 3 inches or higher and mow before the grass reaches 4.5 inches, removing no more than one third of the leaf tissue.
Should I take batteries out of tools for winter?
Take them off the machine and store them indoors rather than in an unheated garage. We publish no storage temperature or charge percentage because no manufacturer page we cite states one -- your pack's manual does.
What do I do with fallen leaves before winter?
Mulch them into the lawn if the layer is at or under about half an inch. Penn State Extension states a layer up to about one-half inch in depth is beneficial, and recommends a second pass in a cross direction to shred more finely.
When should I get the snow blower ready?
Before the first forecast, not after it. Charge both packs, check the skid shoes, work the chute through its rotation and test the lights -- all of which is easier in a dry garage in November than in a storm in January.
Is there any fertilizing left to do?
For a high-maintenance lawn, UMN Extension's schedule puts an application in early October. For a low-maintenance lawn the single annual application is in September. Past those windows, the lawn work for the year is done.
